Medication-Assisted Treatment

Addiction is treatable and people recover every day. But to break the vicious cycle of addiction you will need to utilize all the help available. Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a proven, effective option for people struggling to recover from opiate addiction and alcohol dependence.

When people become dependent – whether pills, street drugs, or alcohol – they experience the physical symptoms of withdrawal in the absence of those substances. Along with intense cravings, withdrawal is a hallmark of opioid and alcohol addiction, and the two combined can make recovery especially difficult. Medications may offer a reprieve from the physical symptoms of withdrawal and the intense cravings to use.

Busting a Myth:

Taking medication for opioid addiction is like taking medication to control heart disease or diabetes. It is NOT the same as substituting one addictive drug for another. Used properly, the medication does NOT create a new addiction. It helps people manage their addiction so that the benefits of recovery can be maintained.

MAT has been successfully used for the treatment of addiction to opioids such as heroin and prescription pain relievers that contain opiates, but has also proven effective with alcoholism. The prescribed medication operates to normalize brain chemistry, block the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids, relieve physiological cravings, and normalize body functions without the negative effects of the abused drug. By helping to reduce cravings and withdrawal, medication-assisted treatment can help addicts stop thinking constantly about using.

The MAT treatment method, in conjunction with therapy, offers a reprieve from the physical symptoms of opiate withdrawal and the intense cravings to use. MAT is the use of medications (buprenorphine (Suboxone), naltrexone (Vivitrol), Antabuse, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a “whole patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. Research shows that a combination of medication and therapy can successfully treat these disorders, and for some people struggling with addiction, MAT can help sustain recovery.
